This is a project idea I pitched to the Essence of Athens group and as a member of the Athens Municipal Arts Commission I took on setting up the framework to implement covering traffic signal boxes with local art.
Information
The idea is not new - plenty of communities (and some in Ohio) have recognized that traffic signal boxes are enormous refrigerator- sized opportunities. While they're not necessarily ugly, they are certainly not interesting. Some people see them as a colossal invasion of the public realm, and, because there is one for every traffic signal, Athens has many city-wide chances to inspire.
