The goal of this map was to create a resource for local and visiting bicycle riders in Athens, Ohio. The need for this map is great because Athens is a center for higher education and has a high turnover of residents (students and faculty).
The design focus for this map was to provide insight into the best bicycle routes and resources to use in the City of Athens. Some of the bike related resources on this map include; location of steep grades, public repair stations, best practices for locking up a bicycle, use of bike racks on the City bus system, riding rules and tips, a list of useful bicycle accessories and where to buy them.
Information
One of the unique challenges designing this map was creating a visual hierarchy that kept the familiar and recognizable automotive based arterial style, but still allowed users see and focus primarily on the bicycle related infrastructure.
The cultural essence of the Athens, Ohio region and bicycle culture was incorporated into many of the design elements on this map. See the tabbed examples
